My Story…

and “WHY” Procurement Leadership

Buongiorno!

I’m Mark.

“Embarking on a mission to contribute and support others, I aim to serve and give back in a way that honors the mentors, both past and present, who shaped me into the Procurement Leader I am today.”

Helping procurement professionals transform into Procurement Leaders!

beginnings…

Born in Southern California and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, I have always had lifelong aspirations and dreamed of one day to “grow up” to become a procurement professional.

Okay, the above photo is 100% me, but, like many of you, I had no clue what procurement or contracts or purchasing, or whatever you want to call it, was. 😊

I’ve always wanted to serve others though… and,

Procurement professionals serve others to ensure everyone in the organization has the tools and resources they need to be successful.

Service Leadership and “Being all that you can be”…

My service, literally, first started while serving in the United States Army.

Even though being career military didn’t resonate with me, I’m proud to have served my Country and will always be appreciative for the leadership lessons that the Army taught me.

And, more importantly, I’m so grateful for the men and women of our Armed Forces who have given so much more than me to our Country…. Thank you, active military and veterans, for your service.

While in the Service, I was also fortunate to have to worked from people from various backgrounds, and learned how to work together as a team.

Then, later learn how to lead a team.

What was instilled from me as a leader in the Service was that leading is not telling or ordering others, leading is caring about the members of your team in order to accomplish the mission at hand.

And, leaders eat last. IYKYK. 😉

Because, in the world of servant leadership, there's a golden rule: servant leaders prioritize the needs of others before themselves.

Can I get a Hooah! from our veterans out there?

Back to School...

After nearly five years in the Army, I was honorably discharged and soon put my GI benefits to use (Yay!) and enrolled in a local community college with the goal to obtain a degree in business.

After earning an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree, I transferred to a State university and earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Business Administration with a focus in Finance, specifically, managerial finance and investments.

(It wasn’t until later in life that I then earned a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from another State university… much much later.)

After graduation…

I worked in the financial arena for a spell, but it just did not align with my Core Values.

Guess what?

I didn’t know what my Core Values were at that time, but it just didn’t feel right.

Do you know what I mean?

That intuition or gut feeling… that little something that gnaws at you, but you don’t know what it is.

I would figure out my Personal Mission Statement and Core Values later. (That’s a story for a different time.)

So, after making a bit of money (which seemed like quite a bit back then), I took some time off and studied.

“Studied” is just a fancy word that means that I read “a lot.”

I read books about leadership, goal setting, business, “finding your true path,” money, entrepreneurship, negotiation, service leadership, and all the other self-help and motivational classics out there.

As the savings were dwindling at a rapid pace (okay, at a “OMG I need to do something” scary pace), and the need to make money to stay alive became a priority, I found myself employed serving in the private sector that operated as a quasi-governmental entity.

A knock at the door…

Almost immediately, a (proverbial) “knock” was at my imaginary cubicle door.

Hey, Mark!

Do you want to help out in the purchasing office for a little bit?

They are behind and really need some help.

I think you will be a great fit!

And, as they say…. 😊

the rest is history.

How many of you can relate to stumbling upon your procurement career path?

In my years working in procurement, I've encountered few who actively chose this field.

It's not a reflection of the career's worth; rather, it highlights the lack of structured models and frameworks to promote awareness and recruitment into the procurement profession.

And, when we “fall” into this thing called procurement or purchasing or contracts or acquisition, or whatever it was called, or is called, where you work, we have to learn hands on in the trenches.

Oftentimes, we learn by

🔥 Trial by fire! 🔥

More than 25 years later…

I worked in the private sector for a while, then found myself in Federal procurement.

Wow!

Talking about a mind shift!

The principles of procurement are the same… just a mountain of Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) to follow.

Later, I found my calling by working in higher education. No more FAR, but an abundance of State statutes, codes, and regulations to follow, along with board policies and procedures.

Again, the same principles and procurement best practices apply. Just different policies to follow.

A bonus while serving in all of my procurement roles in these organizations was that I was fortunate to have gained a vast amount of experience working with people from very diverse backgrounds, whether it be people with disability, ethnic, cultural, academic, religious, orientation, or socioeconomic differences, and appreciated how diversity enriches the workplace.

Through my personal experiences, I have also learned that respect and appreciation for differences are paramount, and in which all contributions are welcomed, respected, and valued.

And, along the way, I earned a lot of ABCs after my name.

You know, those procurement certifications offered in both the private and public sector that tell people that you know what you’re doing…. A.P.P., C.P.M., CPPB, CPPO, then NIGP-CPP was my time, effort, stress, and money “cert” path. 😉

I’m a big proponent for self study and professional certification, and have always been a resource for others who had questions and wished to pursue them. (Another topic for another time.)

I’m of the mindset that a commitment to lifelong learning is a hallmark of effective leadership in procurement.

My book…

Driven by a continued passion for servant leadership, I decided to write a book to share my insights and lessons learned while in the procurement profession so others could learn quicker than I did, and so they didn’t have to go through the (oftentimes brutal) procurement gauntlet that I did.

By the way…

Have you read my book? 😉 📚

Knowing how hard we work and how busy we all are, I wanted my book to be easily digestible.

Bits and pieces of “lessons learned,” if you will.

I wanted to share my mistakes, and how to avoid them, to others.

So, my book was going to be a page-a-day book.

You know, the type of book that is a “no nonsense book” and each chapter is one to three pages.

A quick read, let it sink in, implement it if you wish, then carry on with your day.

I even had a name for my book… Procurement Leadership (with a fancy schmancy subtitle after it).

Not a creative title. But it fit.

However…

After many years, and more than 100 chapters and topics in idea or draft form, I felt defeated that “my book” wasn’t completed yet.

Why wasn’t it completed yet?

TIME!

You feelin’ me now?

I know you get it when I say I just didn’t have the time to finish the book.

Is time an excuse?

Partly.

Partly because…

Well…

Especially, since I went through grad school while in a management role… working the same amount of hours… but yet finding the discipline to pursue a MPA degree…

But no book. 📚

The “Ah Ha” Moment!

More years passed, disappoint about not finishing my book gnawed at me, then… the

“Ah ha” moment!

YouTube!

Wait a second… what?

I decided I was going to start a YouTube channel?

Who woulda’ thunk it?

Not me.

If you would have asked me just a few years ago if I ever thought about starting a YouTube channel I would have laughed and shrugged it off.

But…

YouTube was a platform that I could film and upload videos about procurement…. one by one by one.

Maybe I can give a go at this YouTube thing, I thought.

After all, I already had more than 100 topics (psst… it grew to nearly 200 at this point 😊.)

And, YouTube is the #2 search engine platform in the world.

I’ll reach a much larger audience than a book, I said to myself!

Plus, my colleagues are surely tired of me talking about “my book.” 📚 LOL.

Hence,

The YouTube channel

Procurement Leadership

was borne!

MY GOAL WITH THIS CHANNEL

  1. My goal is to educate our up-and-coming new Procurement professionals so they can level up and accelerate their career quicker than I did.

  2. My goal is to educate the seasoned professional who may need a refresher.

  3. My goal is to share all my “lessons learned” over more than 25 years in the Procurement profession.

  4. My goal is to give back to the Procurement profession.

  5. My goal is not to take myself too seriously.

  6. My goal is to enjoy the journey.

  7. My goal is to serve others.

How are we going to do this?…

This is a lofty goal for me.

You see, I’m really an introvert. My wife, Barbara (aka “Boo”) is the extrovert of our relationship.

Yes.

You read that right, Boo… that’s my name for her, and now, for others as well. (If you see her, ask to see her necklace. 😊)

You see, being extrovert comes naturally to Boo.

She’s FBI after all… full-blooded Italian. Ha!

(Now you understand the “Buongiorno greeting above, don’t ya’?)

With big hair (“the taller the hair the closer to God,” she says) and a big vibrant personality (you the know the type—the kinda’ person that everyone notices when they walk in a room), talking with people and making friends is easy for Boo.

They say opposites attract and I am the living proof of that statement. I’m a proud introvert—give me a book over a party any day! I'll be on my way to a quiet room before you can even say “come back!” But, when I'm with my close friends and inner circle, that’s a different story.

The two words that best describe me would be an Optimistic Stoic.

What the heck does that mean?” you might be asking yourself. 🤔

Well, I might come off as a bit ”direct” or even “as-a-matter-of-fact sometimes. My mind most often operates in very logical, clear-cut, and black and white terms. Perfect for my profession(!), but I’m also not afraid to explore the shades of grey when logic says it's okay, and offer creative solutions from an unconventional and optimistic lens.

Imagine having the brain of a Vulcan—all logical and composed, but in my heart, I have the positive nature and creativity of a Tigger! Sometimes, this super optimism can be a bit too much for people, but that's just who I am.

Now, I know what you're thinking…

Tigger meets Vulcan? 🐯🖖

That's an odd combo!

But that’s exactly what you’ll get with Procurement Leadership.

Similar to Paconius Agrippinus’ teachings as written by Greek stoic philosopher Epictetus,

I want to be like the red thread.

And in the words of Tigger (T-I-double guh-er!),

It’s a dangerous path I bounce…If you hit a bush or a tree you’ll fall, so do your best to avoid them all. It’s gonna be great!”

Guess what? If you're ready for something a bit different from your usual procurement vids, you’re in the right place!

With Procurement Leadership, expect a bit of eccentricity, perhaps some dry humor, and plenty of insightful lessons that'll satisfy both your fun and logical sides!

So, despite being an introvert and an Optimistic Stoic, stepping out of my comfort zone for Procurement Leadership is another one of my commitments to serve others.

And, even though this is a stretch for me, and putting myself out there on “Front Street” will certainly create some discomfort and vulnerability for me (being the introverted Optimistic Stoic that I am), I know that serving others through Procurement Leadership will erase any negative thoughts or emotions or criticisms on the already anticipated climb up “Cringe Mountain.” IYKYK. Yikes!

I am ready to make this leap of faith.

To quote a poem by Patrick Overton from The Leaning Tree: Poems,

"When you come to the edge of all the light you know and are about to step into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing that one of two things will happen; there will be something solid to stand on, or you'll be taught to fly."

Let’s do this!

What next?…

And my promise to you!

I’m so glad you asked!

Join me on this adventure, will you?

My servant leadership philosophy is, and I’m a believer that, this “tent” is big enough for EVERYONE!

It doesn’t matter where you are on your procurement journey, your beliefs, or ideals—I welcome all—and, I expect that we all engage and interact in an encouraging and supportive and courteous manner among each other… among our procurement familia!

Can we all agree on that?

Come laugh with me (or at me 😉).

Let’s learn, and have fun at the same time.

I promise you'll glean a thing or two from the experience, or more…

Okay…

Much, much more

And, together, MORE than you and I could ever imagine.

That, I promise you!

Curious about what's next?

The pursuit of procurement excellence, that’s what.

Pretty cool, right?

Explore my videos on Procurement Leadership, and let's continue this journeytogether!

And, when our paths cross, please be sure to say, “Hello!” and tell me what video you would like me to make next. (psst… I have over 500 video topics and ideas for this channel now, but I want to hear what YOU would like to see.)

Oh yea, when you go check out videos on Procurement Leadership, be sure to like, share, comment, and subscribe… and all that other YouTube(y) stuff!

It would mean the world to me and would “spark joy” in my life.

And, who wouldn’t want a “spark of joy” in their life, right? ✨

Welcome to the Procurement Leadership familia!

I appreciate YOU. ❤️ 😊👊

Now, let’s do this… together!

In service to you and the rest of the procurement community,

Mark
